All of the Kisoji trail is in the mountains.

The thing to see in the Kiso area is the town streets that are brimming with nature and historic atmosphere. Why not take a leisurely stroll down the streets that feel like a trip back in time to the Edo Period as you experience nature?

To the west is a solitary mountain peak that is the second tallest in Japan after Mt. Fuji, Mt. Ontake. To the east is Kiso Komagatake, the main peak in the Central Alps. Even for Japan, where 3,000 m class mountains aren’t uncommon, Kiso is proud to be surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the country.

Beautiful, clear streams weave through the deep mountains that raise 300-year-old Kiso hinoki (Japanese cypress) trees in scenery that changes with the four seasons. And the old town streets of the Nakasendo highway, unchanged since the Edo Period, are sure to give you a sense of the true Japan like you’ve never felt before.
